CC1101 Sub-GHz Matching Network

IoT radio · 315–928 MHz ISM · 4 bands · matching network design

Off-the-shelf TI CC1101 transceiver on a compact PCB with two chip antennas. Client (KickR Design) needed all four ISM bands matched in-case, with display installed. We designed and tuned matching networks for each band and measured ≤ −10 dB return loss across every required range.

Fragmented Aperture

GPS Controlled-Reception-Pattern Antenna (CRPA)

L-band · miniaturized · model + measured hardware

Miniaturized GPS CRPA designed via the fragmented-aperture methodology — published as IEEE AP-S 2007 (Maloney et al.). Demonstrated excellent agreement between FDTD prediction and measured radiation patterns on fabricated hardware.

Phased Array

Wide-Scan PCB Fragmented Aperture Array

UWB · printed-circuit-board fabrication · DARPA-program heritage

Wide-scan, integrated-PCB fragmented aperture array element with measured 33 : 1 instantaneous bandwidth. Published IEEE APSURSI 2011 (Maloney et al.). Element design exploits — rather than avoids — electrical connections between adjacent radiators.

Switched / Agile Aperture Antenna

DARPA ACT · electronically reconfigurable · binary switching

Reconfigurable fragmented aperture antenna using electronic switches between metallic pads. Beam direction, bandwidth, and polarization controlled without mechanical movement. Foundational publication: Maloney et al., IEEE AP-S 2000.
