Principal Engineer & Technical Director | Marietta Research Solutions
Dr. James G. Maloney is the inventor of the Fragmented Aperture Antenna (US Patents 6,323,809, 11,228,102 & 11,937,270) and a recognized leader in computational electromagnetics and antenna design. His career spans over 25 years across academia, defense, intelligence, and commercial industry.
Georgia Tech Research Institute (1992–2000, 2003–2013): Dr. Maloney served as Chief Scientist for GTRI, where he directed IRAD investment and technology evaluation. His doctoral thesis produced 8 journal papers and 6 conference presentations, earning both the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Best Paper Award (1993) and Runner-up (1992). His research pioneered the application of FDTD techniques to composite materials analysis and novel antenna design. His FDTD codes evolved into general-purpose electromagnetic analysis tools used extensively by GTRI and defense industry personnel. He directed a successful 10+ year technology exploration project for the intelligence community focused on antenna and mobile device technology.
Compass Technology Group (2013–2023): As one of the first four employees, Dr. Maloney co-authored the government proposals on which the company was founded. He designed the antennas underlying all CTG measurement systems, developed the CTG-Calc measurement and material extraction software, and programmed FANUC robots to scan canopy and aircraft radome surfaces for RF performance verification against military specifications.
PhotonEx Corporation (2000–2003): Led the modeling team at this fiber-optic communications startup in Bedford, Massachusetts, supporting advanced development, product design, and sales. Delivered an invited tutorial lecture at IEEE LEOS 2002 on commercial 40Gb/s long-haul transport solutions.
Dr. Maloney is currently authoring the definitive book on Fragmented Aperture Antennas: Fragmented Aperture Antennas →
